How to Choose a Post-Acure Care Hospital

Choosing the right post-acute care hospital for a loved one who has suffered a catastrophic illness or injury can be difficult and stressful. Often, that decision must be made within days, or sometimes even hours. Here are some suggestions for selecting the right post-acute care hospital.

Strong Reputation

The hospital should have a proven reputation for providing high-quality care. The hospital should also be accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Expert Physician Team

Physicians on-site 24 hours a day. Individualized therapy/ treatment plans should be designed for each patient's optimum recovery.

Experienced Hospital Staff

Although physicians oversee patient treatment, hospital staff (physician assistants, nurses, and therapists) provide much of the day-to-day care. Hospital staff should be licensed and credentialed in their field and specialty. It is also important for the hospital to have a high staff/patient ratio.

Teaching Affiliate

Hospitals with teaching affiliations generally have access to the finest resources, as well as the latest technologies and treatment techniques.

Health Insurance

For many people, choosing a post-acute care hospital is dictated by their health insurance provider. Check to see that the hospital accepts the patient's insurance plan.

Location

It is important the location be convenient so family members can visit often and be involved with the patient's recovery.
