PRESS RELEASE

SINAI HOWARD FOGEL, MD WILL TALK ON DIABETES TREATMENT UPDATES

STOUGHTON, MA  Howard Fogel, MD, Medical Director of the Richard Field Diabetes Center at New England Sinai, will speak on “Diabetes Treatment Updates” as part of Sinai’s annual diabetes lecture event, which is free and open to the public, on Monday, November 5, 2007 from 7-8 pm in Sinai’s Brenner Conference Center at 150 York Street. Prior to the lecture, there will be vendor displays, samples and giveaways from 6-7 pm. Dr. Fogel has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association and the National Committee for Quality Assurance for providing quality care to his patients with diabetes at Sinai for over a decade. In addition to serving as Medical Director of the Richard Field Diabetes Center at Sinai Hospital, he is Clinical Instructor in Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and President of Sinai’s Medical Staff.

According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is the fifth-deadliest disease in the United States. Since 1987 the death rate due to diabetes has increased by 45 percent, while the death rates due to heart disease, stroke, and cancer have declined. Thanks, in part to research, advances in treatment are being developed at a rapid pace, such as new blood sugar monitoring technologies and new insulin therapies. Dr. Fogel will speak briefly on these and provide other updates.

Dr. Fogel is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and has been on staff at Sinai since 1990. He holds a medical degree from Boston University. After completing an internship and residency program at University Hospital, Boston, he served a clinical fellowship in medicine (Diabetes) at the Joslin Diabetes Center and a clinical and research fellowship in medicine and endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Fogel is a Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and the subspecialty of endocrinology and metabolism. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology.

The Diabetes Physician Recognition Program was designed to improve the quality of care that patients with diabetes receive by recognizing physicians who deliver quality diabetes care, and by motivating other physicians to document and improve their delivery of diabetes care. To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, Dr. Fogel submitted data that demonstrated performance that meets the Program’s key diabetes care measures. These measures include eye exams, blood pressure tests, nutrition therapy and patient satisfaction, among others. When people with diabetes receive quality care as outlined by these measures, they are less likely to suffer complications such as heart attacks, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputations.

The Diabetes Center at New England Sinai Hospital is designed to promote the health and well-being of patients with diabetes. Through a team approach, the Center serves as a resource to the patient, the patient's family and the primary care physician.  The Diabetes Center team makes a careful evaluation of the patient's overall health and history, and tailors an individualized program of medical management, education, nutrition, and exercise counseling. An ongoing program of treatment and support helps the patient maintain an appropriate level of glucose control and minimize complications. The Diabetes Center of New England Sinai Hospital has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Patient Education since 1993.
