PRESS RELEASE

LEADING THE WAY IN PATIENT SAFETY AT NEW ENGLAND SINAI HOSPITAL

STOUGHTON, MA  As part of an ongoing initiative to improve patient care at Sinai,  a Meditech Clinical Applications electronic medication administration record (EMAR) has been implemented and is being used alongside a new bar code system known as BMV or Beside Medication Verification to identify patients and to scan medication to ensure the 5 rights:

  • right patient
  • right medication
  • right dose
  • right time
  • right route

According to Karen Hughes, Sinai’s Vice President for Nursing, “Sinai is the only long-term acute care hospital in the region to implement the Meditech-BMV system, which enhances accurate administration of medication and takes advantage of the latest technology to improve patient care and safety. This new system is just one of the many ways that we continue to put our patients’ first.”

The system also provides caregivers with immediate access to clinical data that may impact the medication being given. By providing a patient’s current results prior to medication dispensing and administration, errors can be prevented and critical information can be accessed faster and easier than ever before.

The EMAR/BMV system also involves barcoding all medications dispensed to Sinai patients, which facilitates:

  • integrating barcode checks into routine patient care
  • providing critical care patient information - allergies, latest test results, and vital signs at the point of care so they can be assessed and correlated with medication administration.
  • communicating reasons why a medication is not being administered.

New England Sinai Hospital is a 212-bed, non-sectarian, not-for-profit, long-term acute-care hospital with its main campus in Stoughton, MA and inpatient satellite units at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and Caritas Carney Hospital in Dorchester. Recognized as a regional leader in pulmonary, medically complex and acute rehabilitation care, Sinai also offers a wide range of outpatient programs and services.  Sinai is a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine.
