PRESS RELEASE

SINAI'S HOWARD FOGEL, MD RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR PROVIDING QUALITY DIABETES CARE

STOUGHTON, MA  Lester P. Schindel, President and CEO of New England Sinai Hospital, has announced that Howard Fogel, MD has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for providing quality care to his patients with diabetes. Dr. Fogel serves as Medical Director of the Richard Field Diabetes Center at New England Sinai Hospital, Clinical Instructor in Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and President of Sinai’s Medical Staff.

“This is the third consecutive, three-year term that Dr. Fogel has earned recognition with distinction citation from the Provider Recognition Program of the American Diabetes Association and the NCQA. He receives this national recognition for helping to prevent or delay the devastating complications associated with this chronic disease,” said Sinai Chief Medical Officer Lawrence S. Hotes, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E.

Dr. Fogel is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and has been on staff at Sinai since 1990. He is a resident of North Easton, MA. He holds a medical degree from Boston University. After completing an internship and residency program at University Hospital, Boston, he served a clinical fellowship in medicine (Diabetes) at the Joslin Diabetes Center and a clinical and research fellowship in medicine and endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Fogel is a Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and the subspecialty of endocrinology and metabolism. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology.

The Diabetes Physician Recognition Program was designed to improve the quality of care that patients with diabetes receive by recognizing physicians who deliver quality diabetes care, and by motivating other physicians to document and improve their delivery of diabetes care. To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, Dr. Fogel submitted data that demonstrated performance that meets the Program’s key diabetes care measures. These measures include eye exams, blood pressure tests, nutrition therapy and patient satisfaction, among others. When people with diabetes receive quality care as outlined by these measures, they are less likely to suffer complications such as heart attacks, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputations.

The Diabetes Center at New England Sinai Hospital is designed to promote the health and well-being of patients with diabetes. Through a team approach, the Center serves as a resource to the patient, the patient's family and the primary care physician.  The Diabetes Center team makes a careful evaluation of the patient's overall health and history, and tailors an individualized program of medical management, education, nutrition, and exercise counseling. An ongoing program of treatment and support helps the patient maintain an appropriate level of glucose control and minimize complications. The Diabetes Center of New England Sinai Hospital has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for Quality Patient Education since 1993.
