PRESS RELEASE

HAROLD G. CARO ALZHEIMER'S CENTER
DEDICATED AT NEW ENGLAND SINAI HOSPITAL

STOUGHTON, MA On June 17, 2008 Lester P. Schindel, President and CEO of New England Sinai Hospital, and Sinai Board Chairman Richard Blankstein joined with the family of the late Harold G. Caro of Brookline to dedicated the hospital’s Alzheimer’s Center in his name. Caro’s wife, Judith Brown Caro, sons Robert, Peter and Roger, grandchildren, friends, Sinai staff and board members, gathered in a ceremony that paid tribute to his good works and celebrated his memory. Judith Brown Caro unveiled an inscribed tribute plaque, now installed in the Harold G. Caro Center.

“Harold was deeply concerned with helping those afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. The Harold G. Caro Alzheimer’s Center at Sinai is a lasting symbol of the difference he made in their lives and reflects the outstanding care our Alzheimer’s Adult Day Program provides,” said Schindel.

Harold G. Caro passed away in December 2007 at the age of 73. A longtime Board Member and Vice Chairman on the Sinai Board of Directors, he worked tirelessly to create an Alzheimer’s Adult Day Program for the hospital. A talented entrepreneur, he also gave his time and energy to make the lives of Sinai Alzheimer’s Center participants as joyful and dignified as possible. He created a scholarship fund for those who would otherwise be unable to attend the program, established an entertainment fund, frequently took participants on outings in his own motor home, and hired a hairdresser. He understood that caring for those with Alzheimer’s and enriching their lives also gave their families great peace of mind.

About 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's, a toll expected to more than triple by 2050 as the population grays. The creeping brain disease gradually robs sufferers of their memories and ability to care for themselves. There is no known cure; today's drugs only temporarily alleviate symptoms.

The Alzheimer’s Adult Day Program at Sinai helps participants remain in the community by providing them with care and companionship while their families handle their daily commitments without worry or interruption. Sinai also provides caregivers of those with Alzheimer's and other dementia problems support, information and education. To learn more, call (781) 297-1375.
