Pulmonary Center of Excellence

A Reputation for Excellence in Vent Weaning

At Sinai, we believe that weaning patients from the vent is as much an art as it is a science. Our vent-weaning program is the largest in the region equipped to care for 70 ventilator-dependent patients.  Under the guidance of board certified university trained pulmonologists our expert therapists have achieved an outstanding level of excellence. We are especially proud of our aggressive vent-weaning program achieving outcomes that exceed the national benchmark. In addition, Sinai has been a major contributor of ventilator-weaning data for a national multi-center ventilator-weaning study published in the medical journal Chest, January 2007.

Alexander White, MDUnder the direction of the chief of pulmonary medicine Dr. Alexander C. White, cited as a top 100 doctor by Boston Magazine, the Rose Kalman Research Center has received various research grants and is breaking new ground in clinical research related to pulmonary disease and rehabilitation.

Sinai is a major teaching affiliate for pulmonary and critical care fellows from Tufts University School of Medicine.

The Rose Kalman Research Center is one of the pillars of the new Pulmonary Center of Excellence at New England Sinai Hospital. The research is clinically based and aims to improve outcomes of patients who are chronically critically ill. Current projects being completed include an analysis of ventilator associated pneumonia in a cohort of over 100 subjects, a study of decannulation following tracheostomy and an analysis of blood replacement treatments used in the long term acute care setting. Data were recently presented as posters at the American Thoracic Society 2007 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Plans for the future include the development of a web based database of all patients admitted to a New England Sinai Hospital unit (including satellite units) along with a tissue bank of blood samples for a study of repair processes in this population.
