Steward Adds 70 New Behavioral Health Beds to System in 2014

30 New Geriatric Psychiatry Beds Coming Online in December at Carney Hospital and New England Sinai Hospital

Steward Health Care System LLC (Steward), the largest private provider of inpatient behavioral health services, has added 70 new behavioral health beds to the system in 2014. This includes 15 geriatric psychiatry beds at Carney Hospital in Dorchester and another 15 geriatric psychiatry beds at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton coming online in December.

“We recognize the need for more inpatient behavioral health beds and better coordination of behavioral health services,” explained Justine Carr, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Steward. “As an accountable care organization, we are able to make these investments and expand services while other systems still operating in the traditional fee-for-service model are struggling to maintain the same level of behavioral health services.”

Since 2010, Steward has invested more than $25 million in capital expenses to address the behavioral health needs of the communities it serves. This includes a 20% increase in the number of behavioral health beds added to the Steward system this year. Steward has also invested additional resources to support quality, safety and patient experience initiatives.

“We are committed to providing care to our patients in the communities where they live,” added Dr. Carr. “While the Commonwealth and others have cut back, we are expanding critical services that our patients need.”
